Contracting Hansen's as a child and soon after abandoned to a colony, Ebbeling was a self-taught painter who devoted himself to creating detailed portraits of fellow sufferers of Hansen's. Some art historians believe that Petr Breugel was familiar with Ebbeling's paintings and incorporated the latter's painstaking preoccupation with flesh decay into his own work. Only a handful of Ebbeling's paintings have survived, all of them belonging to an anonymous collector based in Pretoria.
